It's a good thing that events like this are happening, given that Friday night the Trumpscum Traitors declared war on Europe with their National "Security" Strategy they released at midnight, knowing what response it would get. Europe now needs to consider the government of the United States as much an enemy as is Putin. For our part, we have to End These People. Fortunately, like all fascists, they're fucking morons. But the next eleven months are going to be as important as any between 1939-45.

Oh, and congratulations to you, Katja. You have "arrived" with this. It's always good to see someone who deserves to win, winning.

The US Strategy Statement has Putin's fingerprints all over it. Now we know what Witkoff was doing all those times he went to Moscow.

And now we can get back to the BAU of the EU blocking our vaccine deliveries, recognising the financial standards of China, but not ours, and asking for €6bn to join the SAFE programme, whilst the Canadians pay €10m.

For all the warmth of the banquet , the Germans are cold blooded pragmatists who choose to use these opportunities to take the Brits for a ride and show how much contempt they have for them. Brexit to blame for everything in the eyes of Steinmeier while Schroeder and Angela’s pipelines played no part at all.

When Farage becomes PM and relations become distinctly frostier one wonders if the Germans may self reflect. I think we all know they won’t .

I think your comments are disingenuous and, frankly, given our host on this blog, and the topic she was writing about, rather offensive. Perhaps you should be the one engaging in self-reflection (but I doubt you will…..)

As I said elsewhere Katja the event and setting looked spectacular. And repeating myself your reward for a great deal of hard work. As you say these events are so important in cementing important relationships in these difficult days. I hope our politicians took advantage of the opportunity to firm up agreements on defence and economic cooperation in behind the scenes meetings. Notwithstanding the passage of time when you look back and consider the history of strife between the UK and Germany I still find events such as this remarkable. Congratulations Katja, what next I wonder?

I have to say I am envious. I have been to Buck House twice for garden parties, the one with Nelson Mandela was special, but never to a state dinner or even to lunch at the Palace. As for the broader question of Anglo-German relations, a friend (best man for the second time this year) was a keen participant in the Konigswinter conferences which also had a youth conference. In the old days of a divided Berlin, I have been to some odd events. Clearing out this week, I came across a photo of me in 1979 at a conference convened by the former head of the CIA station in Berlin. That was a very odd experience.

I was looking forward to hearing all about that glorious event ,I think you missed a trick ,a small helium balloon 🎈 tied to your outfit so we could spot you in the crowd would have been handy. So what did get to eat ,a bit more upmarket than fish&chips and bratwurst i would hope .How was the King's German?Better than Edward Heath's French i would imagine. Question for the Anglo German historian ,did Queen Victoria ever hold a state banquet for Bismarck?
