I agree that there are not many overlaps. If the Republic of Ireland wanted, hypothetically, to rejoin the United Kingdom that might be a closer analogy. (They don"t of course.That divorce is final.) Still, I imagine that Brits visiting Ireland must feel like Germans visiting Austria. You're in a foreign country - but also not.

Very true the East/West Germany was very much an infant compared to the 'Troubles' which many argue has its roots going back to the 15-1600's

Northern Ireland has a social majority, for now, it is up to that social sector to ensure they maintain that majority within the law. Demonstrations and marches likely distract from that task.

Norther Ireland or six counties are often misnamed Ulster. Ulster like the unified Germany of today is not complete when refering to 1930.s mapping.
