Sounds to me like the future of Germany would be brighter were von Storch to end up as Guest of Honor at a single car/single driver fatality. It would also be a good thing if some of the conservative dunces over there were to re-read the history of the Christian Democrats in the 30s and what happened to that party from the dalliance of too many of them with thinking the Nazis could be "reasoned with." Like it would have helped me and my fellow Democrats and the Republicans we dealt with in the California legislature to realize 50 years ago that the Orangatang County far right "kooks" were more than objects of derision. Ah well, as my late wife was fond of saying to me when I got into "alternative histories" - "If wishes were horses, we'd all be riding."
Merz - like Macron and Starmer - is dedicated to the destruction of his country.
Decent, rational, family-oriented people in all three nations wish to see the return of conservative values - which include proper law and order, sensible energy policies and safeguarding personal liberties.
At the moment - in all three countries - social stability is in serious risk.
Merz, Macron and Starmer are not governing for their people.
“von Storch proposed provoking greater polarisation “comparable to the situation in the USA”
Does she actively believes that emulating the wholesale destruction of myriad institutions and the dismantling of the structures which tenuously support a notion of society is a strategy to make the AfD more electable?
Surely it should be ,that elected officials must be clear on where they stand on specific issues, politicians are very very good at not answering questions leaving many answers in grey areas, but if they can’t / won’t answer certain questions then they should be named and shamed , whether they come from the left or right . People are sick to death of being taken for fools .
As I said elsewhere MAGA or any variety thereof is a malignancy that must be brutally excised. The core of MAGA and its ilk is hatred and stupidity. The rational centre right parties must hold to their policies without wildly lurching to the extreme right. They need policy proposals that are well considered and deliverable. Not crowd pleasing populist tosh. The centre left should address bread and butter issues, jettisoning some of their grievance/culture war rhetoric. In my view they have out kicked their electorate. And while I don’t think banning the AfD is appropriate, every failure to deliver, every misstep, and policy gaff needs to be highlighted by the government. And where they cross the line the government needs to descend upon them like an avenging angel. And to be honest where mistakes have been made, admit it. For example Merkel’s laissez faire attitude to immigration, perhaps a concession that exclaiming “wir schaffen das” was a little optimistic.

Something has to happen.

Therefore learn how to see and not to gape.
To act instead of talking all day long.
The world was almost won by such an ape!
The nations put him here his kind belong.
But don’t rejoice too soon at your escape –
The womb he crawled from still is going strong.
Bertolt Brecht, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (1941)
This quote is very worrying:
