Angela Merkel’s home turf, the Uckermark region around 100 km north of Berlin isn’t exactly known as think tank land. Picture miles and miles of flat land. Fields, pine forests, sandy soil and lakes as far as the eye can see. Occasionally a village or a hamlet justifies a cobbled street.
