One of the saddest, and most stupid, decisions was Thatcher’s attempt to block German reunification against the wishes of the US and SU, the vast majority of Germans and the FCO. She misused a meeting with British historians of Germany to try and bolster her case. At one Konigswinter dinner in a Cambridge college, she sat opposite Helmut Kohl and did not exchange a word with him. Her irrational and visceral hatred of the Germans was totally counter productive and against U.K. national interests.

Both sides of the North Sea! Most German war humour is dying with those who conducted it.

One friend of mine from Berlin when asked if he had been to UK always replied Only Jersey, much nicer than Russia.

Another from NRW, a pilot then used to say he had only seen it from the Air!

Both agreed THEIR North Sea was better than ours with better sand (I would never agree with them) though when they critisised 'our' deckchairs V the German 'beach seats' I would gloss over that item.

Definitely one for the wish list. The EI Podcast has an interview with the author. As I have said before I think the post war rapprochement between the UK and Germany was remarkable. And I hope the British interest in German history is expanding from a focus upon the Nazi era. Good read with my Sunday morning coffee Katja.

As an American, this type of book covers periods that are rarely spoken of here. Katja, your review has me ordering this book from the UK and shipped here. I very much enjoyed Weimar and can’t wait for your next book.

This looks like a great read 👍thanks Katja , from a personal point of view I have found as my understanding of the language improves this opens up so much more understanding of the German culture and naturally books to read and docs to watch , recently returned from Munich and Linz and happy to report that the deutsches Bahn is rapidly getting as bad as our rail system 😃😃
