I'm more of a rooibos drinker first thing in the morning, something to do with the local Dutch influence if I mention coffee the reply is always Douwe Egberts ,which could well transition through Hamburg on its way to The Netherlands. In my role as postie I collect people's parcels and one of the most popular returns are aluminium coffee pods for recycling. The Tchibo factory near Heathrow always smells lovely when you drive past .

Tea Still dominates in this particular English household but I do like a proper cup of coffee....not the high street chain stuff.....from time to time. I'll be in Cologne just before Easter with my wife and daughter and I'm sure I can persuade them to eat cake while I drink coffee!

I have very happy memories of Kaffee und Kuchen at my grandparents’ house - the smell of coffee mixed with the smell of the cigars that my Opa smoked. And a special selection of cakes bought from the Konditorei around the corner!

Great article. I find it fascinating that coffee became a staple drink in Germany due to overland trade routes while tea reigned supreme in Britain due to the maritime trade secured by the Royal Navy, where coffee was actually more of a staple than tea - although not as much as rum.

“There are even cafés where staff will weigh, time and control water temperature for every cup.”

My local coffee shop, “Escape Coffee and Cakes”, also weigh, times, and controls water temperature”, which I have never seen anywhere else.

As ever enjoyed with my first coffee of the day. For preference I use a French press, have done for years; the vital start to every day. I have two coffee machines and use them if I want a quick coffee. Last year I was in Berlin, a couple of days before your Kaiserreich themed tour, I had kaffee und a lethal slice of großer Schokoladenkuchen. Well nigh a substitute for lunch. I have never drunk tea, foul brew.

Over many years of coffee drinking I now have four “machines” or methods of making coffee (and instant). For me the process is part of the joy and different moods need different methods. Others in the household disagree…
