The old puritans, in England anyway, were pretty left leaning. The 17th century Levellers wanted to abolish class, religious idolatry, external distinctions of position (I.e. standardised clothing like Maoism).
We live in crazy times where people are lining up to be offended , Florence sounds a fascinating place to visit , I’m not an art lover by any stretch but sounds like a place to visit, only problem is would probably need weeks there to fully appreciate it
It does seem silly to remove it. Maybe all she needed was a fancy wrap to cover her privates, and be revealed for an hour each day, like our Constitution.
Back in the early 1980s I was a Branch Official with NAPO (U.K. Probation Officers TU). Our annual conference one year was in Brighton, the Dome Theatre. The stage was flanked by 2 life sized statues of naked women in gold gilt, situated about 10m above the auditorium. 95% of members hadn’t noticed but an influential few deemed these “sexist” and on day 2 they were wrapped in brown paper 🤦. So left wing philistine prudishness is not that new 🙄
It's ignorant stupidity like this decision that opens the door to ending up on the receiving end of the firehose of bullshit sprayed daily from Washington DC by our senile old Traitor-in-Chief as he campaigns to end "DEI."
Given German proclivities for naturism I am surprised at the outrage. I have never heard of Stendhal Syndrome, seems an extreme response. Mind you I recently attended a concert of Wagner’s music and it was surprisingly emotional, for me anyway. I have read of US ‘Christians’ being offended when visiting European galleries. I am a bit of a philistine yet I still marvel at the artistry that rendered these astonishing works of arts. Many years ago I saw the Venus de Milo and I was very impressed. And my brother has seen the David and said it was extraordinary. I suppose if one was to be fair this statue is one of the few where the depicted female is aware of her nakedness and makes an attempt to cover up. Some acknowledgement of sexuality? Back to firmer ground. The statue is a wonderful opportunity to tell the story of a huge amount of history: the tale of the artist, Goering and his art theft, how did it wind up in the lake, and the issues of restitution post 1990. Eye popping read with my morning coffee.
Don't call those inbred morons "Christian." Call them what they are: Fundamentalists. Fundamentalism is its own religion, masquerading as "christian," "jewish," "muslim" and "hindu," though it has nothing to do with the actual religions it mimics.
The new puritans are on the left... how ridiculous to move a statue because one person complained.

I don't feel like this is a left vs right issue at all but simple puritanical nonsense by one person. Prudes come in all sizes and political colours.
